Our new research report, Broken Promises: Two years of corporate reporting under Australia’s Modern Slavery Act, examines the second year of corporate statements submitted to the Australian Government's Modern Slavery Register by 92 companies sourcing from sectors with known risks of modern slavery.
Broken Promises is the follow up to the report released earlier this year, Paper Promises? Evaluating the early impact of Australia’s Modern Slavery Act.
The Modern Slavery Act 2018 (Cth) is currently under a three-year statutory review lead by Professor John McMillan AO. A coalition of human rights organisations, church groups and academics are calling on the federal government to strengthen Australia's modern slavery laws after this major investigation found companies are continuing to fail to identify obvious risks of forced labour in their supply chains or take action to address them.
